Sanika Chalke WPL 2027 Auction: MI's ₹10 Lakh Bet
Sanika Chalke joins MI at ₹10 lakh in the WPL 2027 auction. See her T20 numbers, MI's squad gaps and what to watch. Read the analysis.
Sanika Chalke Joins MI at Base Price After 2026 Miss
Mumbai Indians picked the 20-year-old left-handed batter for ₹10 lakh at the Kochi mini-auction. She is listed as uncapped. Some lists spell her name "Saanika"; the sale is the same player.
This is her second WPL auction. A live tracker of the 2026 mega auction listed her as unsold. Eleven months later she went at the same floor price, but to the franchise that now has the most settled core in the league.
The source article calls her a World Cup winner. To be precise, she was part of the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2025 squad. India beat South Africa by nine wickets in the final. She was named vice-captain of that squad under Niki Prasad.
A Mini-Auction Built for Cheap, Specific Roles
Mini-auctions reward franchises that know their gaps. Only 25 of the 27 available slots were filled in Kochi. MI went in with ₹90 lakh to fill six Indian slots. They had no overseas slots at all. A pre-auction IANS report had put the purse at ₹1 crore, so the exact figure is not fully settled.
MI filled all six Indian slots, spending ₹70 lakh in total (calculation). If the ₹90 lakh figure is right, that leaves about ₹20 lakh (calculation). At that budget, a base-price bid is the sensible way to buy depth. The sources I reviewed do not say whether any rival franchise bid for Chalke, so "bidding war" claims are unsupported.
Opener's Numbers: Scoring Pace Is the Selling Point
Two innings that frame her strike rate
She finished as the leading run-scorer in the Mumbai T20 competition, with 223 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 142.94. At that rate, 223 runs implies roughly 156 balls faced (calculation).
The best innings in that run came in a chase. Opening against Thane Sky Risers, she made an unbeaten 74 off 51 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, as her side chased 114 with five overs to spare. Her strike rate there was 145.10 (calculation). Boundaries alone gave her 56 of the 74 runs, about 75.7% (calculation).
Consistency has a limit. In a later match she top-scored with 21 in a 113/9 total that lost to the Falcons. That shows how much her output depends on the platform around her.
She carried the form into the senior circuit. She made 85 off 53 balls for Mumbai against Jharkhand in the ongoing Senior Women's T20 Trophy. That is a strike rate of 160.38 (calculation).
Her ceiling at youth level was also high. In 2022 she scored an unbeaten 200 off 117 balls in an U19 one-day game against Sikkim. That was a different format and age group, so it is background rather than T20 evidence.
A Left-Hander Entering a Crowded Mumbai Dressing Room
MI retained Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr and a core that includes Nicola Carey and Vaishnavi Sharma. The batting core is established and weighted towards overseas names, and MI cannot add another overseas player. My read, and it is only interpretation, is that the new signings are competing for Indian-batter minutes and bench depth.
The source says she bowls both off-breaks and leg-breaks. Wisden lists her bowling style as leg break and her playing role as batter. I could not verify a regular bowling role, so treat her as a batter first.
MI's auction ledger
| Player | Role (as reported) | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Shweta Sehrawat | Batter | ₹20 lakh |
| Disha Kasat | Batter | ₹10 lakh |
| Latika Inamdar | Wicketkeeper-batter | ₹10 lakh |
| Bharti Rawal | Bowler | ₹10 lakh |
| Sanika Chalke | Batter | ₹10 lakh |
| Akshita Bhagat | Not specified in sources | ₹10 lakh |
Source: Business Standard auction tracker. The ₹70 lakh total is my calculation.
Four of the six buys are batters or keeper-batters. That tells you where MI felt thin, though it does not tell you who will play.
Kamalini and Vaishnavi: Two U19 Champions, Two Price Paths
Chalke's price sits inside a pattern. G. Kamalini batted in that same U19 final and was released by MI after holding a ₹1.1 crore contract. Gujarat Giants then signed her for ₹40 lakh. That is a drop of about 64% (calculation).
Vaishnavi Sharma went the other way. She was the U19 World Cup's leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets in six matches. MI retained her.
The market for uncapped players has also cooled. In 2024, Kashvee Gautam became the most expensive uncapped player in WPL history at ₹2 crore. This year the top uncapped price was ₹20 lakh for Shweta Sehrawat, one-tenth of that (calculation). A World Cup medal no longer guarantees a large cheque.
Selection Questions MI Have Not Answered
The WPL 2027 season runs from 14 January to 7 February 2027. Nothing is confirmed about MI's opening pair or how Chalke fits. Three questions are open:
- Role: She opened in the Mumbai T20 league, but MI have not said whether she is an opener or a floater.
- Minutes: With overseas slots full, domestic batters share a small pool of starts.
- Form window: The Senior Women's T20 Trophy is still running, and her innings there will shape selection talk before January.
For fantasy and analyst use, she is a speculative pick until a role is clear.
Chalke Against Trisha: One Final, Two Roles
Her U19 teammate Gongadi Trisha is the useful comparison, because only one match gives clean numbers for both. The comparison is limited to the final.
| Metric (U19 T20 WC final) | Sanika Chalke | Gongadi Trisha |
|---|---|---|
| Runs (balls) | 26* (22) | 44* (33) |
| Strike rate (calculated) | 118.18 | 133.33 |
| Bowling | Not recorded | 3/15 |
| Tournament runs | Not verified | 309 |
Final figures from DT Next's match report. Trisha's tournament total comes from All India Radio's report. I could not independently confirm Chalke's full-tournament total, including the source's list of four unbeaten innings.
Chalke's role in that final was support. She hit four boundaries, including the winning four in the 12th over. Her senior numbers suggest she can now be the primary scorer.
Key Takeaways
- Sanika Chalke went to Mumbai Indians for ₹10 lakh, her base price, after going unsold in the 2026 auction.
- Her case rests on T20 form: 223 runs at 142.94 in the Mumbai T20 league and 85 off 53 in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy.
- MI spent ₹70 lakh across six Indian signings (calculation), so this was budget depth, not a headline buy.
- Her route into the XI is unconfirmed, with no overseas slots open and a retained batting core in place.
